It’s been my dream to visit Costa Rica for over 20 years and I finally traveled there a few weeks ago with two of my kids (ages 10 & 13). It was the BEST decision ever to spend our entire 10 days at Finca Luna Nueva as a home base. The eco-lodge is situated on some of the most stunning piece of primary rain-forest you’ll find anywhere, with breath-taking tropical flowers and abundant wildlife to see and hear everywhere you turn. In the early mornings as I walked to the yoga pavilion I savored the sounds of the morning songbirds and saw colorful butterflies, toucans, armadillos. On my way back from yoga to our lovely cabin with a deck overlooking the forest with a bubbling stream below, I stopped at the restaurant for fresh papaya, pineapple & watermelon and the most delicious Costa Rican coffee. The staff at Finca Luna were the most amazing staff I’ve ever encountered (I am an international tour guide and vacation planner by profession) – every person was friendly, relaxed, kind, helpful – me & my kids became close with so many of them: Jenny the chef who gave me a Costa Rican cooking lesson, Steven the waiter who was always warm and smiling, Julia the housekeeper who surprised us daily with creative towel and flower displays on the beds and a gorgeous bouguet of tropical flowers for our table, Ernesto, Danny and Carlos at reception who helped patiently and graciously with booking our off-site tours and various essential details that enhanced our visit. We primarily came to Costa Rica for our love of nature and this bio-organic farm complete with the incredible head naturalist Alberto (a walking encyclopedia of biological knowledge who is overflowing and passionate to share with anyone interested) brought to life in incredible, experiential detail so many aspects of the sustainable agriculture, rain forest ecosystems and abundant wildlife we experienced as we went on just about every on-site tour offered. My kids found so many colorful frogs and snakes and lizards and sloths on the property, often calling Alberto to come see their sightings and he graciously and enthusiastically spent time answering their many questions and explaining to them all about the animals and their habitat. Our time at Finca Luna Nueva was a living experiential nature center and we were all in bliss. Other tour highlights were the Chocolate making tour with Carlos (we still talk about Carlos’s passion for health, warm personality, and the authentic cocoa making experience), Birding at 6 am with Ishmael the endlessly patient, knowledgeable, expert birder (I did not know I would LOVE seeing the stunning colorful birds as much as I did), and the Night Mysteries Tour with Alberto. We also did many off-site adventures recommended and arranged by the Finca Luna staff including Whitewater-rafting, Horse-riding, Canopy Zip-lining and went to Arenal Eco-Zoo, each one was exhilarating and gratifying. Also, my kids spent every afternoon enjoying the large pool and solar-jacuzzi, including night swims with the pool aflame in colorful dancing lights. Lastly, Steve Farrell, co-owner of this amazing slice of paradise, graced me with an hour of his precious time sharing with me some details about how the original bio-organic farm grew to include the eco-lodge and the many tours and facets of what it has become today, how they create such a special atmosphere among the staff who radiate contentment to the guests, and creating our visions in life. In all my many travels around the world (including recently Galapagos Islands, Italy, Thailand, Scuba diving in Eliat), Finca Luna Nueva Eco-Lodge is my favorite part of the world by far. Highly recommended in every respect, you will not regret staying at this abundantly beautiful, unique, serene place with the kindest, friendliest, people I’ve ever encountered.
